He won it last year – he’s been rubbish this year, mind
You’ll definitely have heard by now, but those rascals at the Daily Mail have gone and leaked the shortlist for the PFA Player of the Year award.
There are a couple of surprise omissions – Nani and Rafael van der Vaart can count themselves unlucky not to be in the running (especially as it was voted for back in February), although it’s good to see the likes of Charlie Adam and Scott Parker get some recognition.
Anyway, what we really want to know is – if you were a stroppy multimillionaire footballer, where would you put your ‘X’ with your Etoile de Montblanc Etoile Précieuse Fountain Pen?
Charlie Adam has been great this season and has made Blackpool one of the most entertaining if not ruthless teams in the Premier League. Most of Blackpool’s good work goes through him.
Gareth Bale? Hmm… The Spoiler says… Nah. He was excellent for two games against Inter Milan but – while he has been undeniably good in the league – he’s not had the same impact on his team that others have had on theirs. There’s an argument for Rafael van der Vaart being the more deserving of the Spurs mob.
Samir Nasri? He was absolutely brilliant for the first half of the season but pretty anonymous since. Arsenal will win nowt – NEXT!
Scott Parker. Scotty Scott Parker. He’s been excellent for the second year running but has added goals to his repertoire of fire-putting-out skillz and – if West Ham survive – it will be largely down to his influence.
The main reason you can tell Carlos Tevez has been good this term is because City have been pretty pony going forward when he’s not been playing. He’s also managed to bag himself 19 goals in between having hissy fits and threatening to quit.
Finally, Nemanja Vidic. He’s been excellent for Man Utd this season with Rio Ferdinand missing for so much of it. He held the hand of the inexperienced Chris Smalling excellently and covered for the poor Jonny Evans excellently. Excellent.
