In their impressionable childish minds, letting an entire nation down would be cause to get the cigars out, share a joke with Ashley Cole, then go on a massive holiday with Jamie Redknapp.
So, thank sweet baby Moses for Julio Cesar, who has impressively redressed the balance by arriving home in Brazil, still unable to stem the flow of bitter tears that have presumably been spattering from his eyes like salty rain water ever since Wesley Sneijder broke his heart.
