Is the Swede about to get involved in the relegation dogfight?
Yesterday Sven-Goran Eriksson was one of the favourites for the Chelsea job but this morning he has leapfrogged Avram Grant and Alan Curbishley to emerge as the frontrunner to succeed Tony Adams at Portsmouth.
The former England boss is currently in charge of Mexico, who face the USA in a World Cup qualifier tomorrow night, and while you would expect him to walk if Chelsea came calling, the Portsmouth link remains unconvincing.
Sven’s last two jobs as a club manager were at Lazio and Manchester City where he spent heavily but at Fratton Park he would take charge of a team who lost two of their star players last month and he wouldn’t be able to bring anyone in until the summer.
It also seems unlikely that Pompey could afford to buy out the remaining year-and-a-half of his reported $7.5 million-a-year contract or come anywhere near to matching that wage. If you disagree with The Spoiler then Sven can still be backed at 3/1 on Paddy Power.
UPDATE: Avram Grant has regained the position of favourite but Sven is still breathing down his neck.
