The Spoiler Awards – Goal of the Season

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Stoke City v Tottenham Hotspur - Britannia Stadium

We were tempted to leave this one right until the end, but we’re so bloody excited about it we’ve dived straight in.

Before we delve as deeply as we can with our 300ish word allowance, we thought we’d share with you the complex equation we’ve used to get definitely the definitive winner. Here it is…

(Quality of Strike + Quality of Opposition) x Size of the Occasion / Player Top Trump rating out of ten

Here we go…

There were loads of great goals boshed in the net in this season’s Champions League. However, probably our two favourite strikes in Europe’s sexiest club competition came from Dejan Stankovic and Lionel Messi.

Stankovic’s goal is potentially one of our favourite goals ever but, as Inter went on to lose to a Schalke team that was – as The Spoiler’s South London friends say – a bit ‘butters’, it just misses out.

Lionel Messi’s individual goal against Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg was absolutely magic.  From the second he got the ball Real players were hacking the hell out of him and he barely broke his stride before slotting it past one of the best goalkeepers in the world…

We were sooooo tempted to have Messi’s goal as the winner, but we’re worried this will just turn into a Bara w*nk pit, so it ain’t.

In Britain, Gareth Bale’s volley against Stoke City at the start of the year was good (occasion lets it down though), while Dimitar Berbatov’s pitch-length-team-goal against Blackburn Rovers was also great (quality of opposition lets it down though)

So, rather boringly some might say, we’ve plumped for…

WAYNE ROONEY V MANCHESTER CITY, 12th FEBRUARY, 2011

It came in a derby, it came out of nowhere and, in hindsight, it was a huge step to United winning the Premier League. After the season Rooney ‘enjoyed’, it was a thoroughly exciting moment of redemption for him.

Since that moment he at least looks like he enjoys playing football again – which has got to be worth a few extra goal points…

We’re wrong aren’t we? Bloody hell. Let us know where we buggered up below…
