Punters stay away in droves
Despite initial claims prostitutes (and their punters) would be having a whale of a time at this year’s World Cup – to the point where there were calls for their trade to be legalized in South Africa while the competition was on – it seems fans have chosen World Cup 2010’s dull, uninspiring football over bedroom action.
Reporters at Brazilian paper Globo Esporte have been getting to know the local professionals, and their stories make for sad reading. Well, they do if you’re a prostitute, anyway.
Those in Port Elizabeth are having it worst. Rather than adding new trade, the World Cup is stealing their regular punters. According to one escort: “Customers are more concerned about football than in sex. I am disappointed.”
Some, including Belly (not the best choice of name for someone in her profession, The Spoiler would’ve thought), who charges £100 for ‘a night full of love’, are even considering upping sticks and switching cities, after the average number of client has fallen from five or six to two per night.
