Make a shopping list for Roy Hodgson
Yes, we know nothing’s been confirmed yet, it could all go tits up and any optimism should only be cautious at this stage. But hey, everyone loves a transfer wish-list. Extra helpings of conjecture on mine, please!
Should John Henry and NESV complete their Liverpool takeover, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility manager Roy Hodgson will soon wake up to one of these outside his door (it’s a ‘transfer warchest’), filled with £10-15m – plus funds recouped from the sea of dead wood at Anfield – for use this winter.
Once the rebuilding has been completed in the boardroom who should Liverpool rope in to start reconstruction on the pitch? Here are our picks:
A winger: Niko Kranjcar – £7-9m
Kranjcar is arguably the best player in the Premier League not able to get a game at the moment, and, with Rafael van der Vaart pulling up trees in Spurs’ midfield, it’s unlikely he’ll ever be a regular starter. Creative, prone to a jinking run, and best of all, a NATURAL winger.
A forward: Kalu Uche – £5-7m
The Reds want a reliable, versatile attacker who won’t mind playing second fiddle (tactically and figuratively) to an occasionally fit Torres. Fresh off a decent World Cup with Nigeria, Almeria’s Kalu Uche offers a creative outlet anywhere across the forward line and, with an average of seven goals a season in La Liga, is likely to contribute his fair share.
A centre-half: Joris Mathijsen – £9-11m
Reliable defensive cover at a decent price is hard to come by at the moment. Solid, if slightly unremarkable, Mathijsen is a mainstay in the Dutch national setup and can play as an auxiliary left back if things get really desperate.
Who do YOU reckon should be first in the door at Anfield? And be realistic – if we hear one ‘Edin Dzeko’, we’re closing down the site.
