Say “Ahoy there” to some Crips!

As reported by The Spoiler’s great pals over at Pies, a nameless Premier League footballer is apparently in the rather unappealing position of having to fork out £15,000 every three months as “protection money” to a South London street gang.

Only last week it was reported in some of the biggest papers that factions of London gangs have recently become affiliated with the legendary LA street gangs, the Crips and the Bloods. And, as a rather chilling aside, a high ranking member of The Spoiler team had a nice South London stroll totally ruined on Saturday by the sight of three terrifying youths approaching with blue neckerchiefs hiding their faces. Presumed Crips.

Anyway, it might have been a lucky escape that day, as they passed by without doling out the expected mugging/walk-by shooting, but for one man, the threat is very real indeed. A South London gangbanger said this to the BBC, concerning the mystery player:

“The people above me have ordered this person that he has to pay them a certain amount of money every couple of months.”

“That’s just in case, so no one can touch you for three or four years but you are still paying that money every three months to keep yourself safe. It’s £15,000 every two or three months, that may not seem a lot to a Premier League footballer but it’s a lot of money.”

He continued:

“We know where your family, friends and the people close to you live and your security isn’t going to protect them all the time.”

Scary stuff.
