Emmanuel Adebayor goes to war with former Arsenal team-mates over footwear

Striker’s shoe fetish caused rifts at Emirates

Emmanuel Adebayor

The private beef which caused Emmanuel Adebayor to moonwalk over Robin van Persie’s face a fortnight ago has been revealed to be the same reason he fell out with Nicklas Bendtner last season – an unhealthy shoe obsession.

According to the News of the World, following Arsenal’s final day win against Stoke last season, Emmanuel knee-slid into the Gunners’ dressing room with an extra-strength bin liner and (as one club rep put it) ’swept the place’, bagging as much of his team-mates’ kit as would fit – including a pair of boots Robin van Persie had planned to give to friends – before hauling ass.

A member of the Arsenal backroom staff was left break the news to the players:

“We never saw him – or the boots – again. Robin was going mad.

Despite it not being his client’s strongest suit, Ade’s agent tried to put a humanitarian face on things:

“A lot of African players take kit back to their country because the facilities and conditions in Africa are not the same as they are in England.

It’s not the first time Adebayor has engaged in shoe-related combat with Arsenal players. The forward’s memorable spat with former strike partner Nicklas Bendtner (which birthed the seminal substitution announcement: “I’m on because you’re shit”) started percolating after Ade took a dislike to the young Dane’s slippers. He told the Telegraph earlier this month:

“There was a rule at Arsenal where no one is allowed to come into the dressing room with trainers or house shoes on. I cannot understand why Nicklas came every day with his shoes on.

After cornering the no. 52 over his choice of footwear, Ade demanded justice:

“Nicklas, you are a footballer, I am a footballer. Maybe I am better than you, maybe you are better than me but you have to respect everyone. There are rules saying you cannot come into the dressing-room with your house shoes. Take them off.

“He never took them off and things started from there. I cannot accept that. Even if that happened tomorrow at City, I would fight with somebody.
