…and not with his ball-juggling skills. Actually, wait…
There was much sympathy from the football world at the start of the month, when it appeared Benni McCarthy had been dropped from the home nation’s World Cup squad for being too fat – an accusation backed up by a man who should know about being too fat, West Ham chairman David Sullivan.
In the past couple of days, however, a scandal has been brewing in South Africa. It’s being claimed the striker was in fact dropped for taking women back to the team hotel. Wait, let us rephrase that… it’s being claimed the married striker was in fact dropped for taking women back to the team hotel.
According to Australian paper The Age, both McCarthy and goalkeeper Rowan Fernandez were cut after being seen charming the ladies over some drinks:
Coach Carlos Alberto Parreira axed the players after being shown CCTV of them going back to their rooms with “some company”, South African media report.
A top football official and a hotel staff member told [South African newspaper City Press] the alleged incident took place after South Africa’s friendly against Colombia at Soccer City in Soweto on May 27.
The staff member told City Press: “The two players had a few drinks after the game in the presence of female friends at the bar. The other players were there too.
Another paper called shenanigans on McCarthy’s exploits. Literally. Said Adelaide Now:
It had initially been reported that McCarthy was dumped for putting on weight but Johanessburg newspaper The Star reported that “the lethal striker had been left out over shenanigans.”
The “shenanigans” were also in breach of a sex ban which the national team … had imposed.
In his defence, we’re sure Benni was just trying to find the most enjoyable way to work off all that extra weight.
